The Welsh gold and clogau gold is known to be the most precious type of gold in the world today due to its purity and its scarcity today. The Clogau mine in Wales was known to be one of the highest gold producing mines until 1995 when the mining had been closed there. The history of this gold mine has been quite eventful and interesting over the centuries.

The mine is believed to date back to Roman times and that was when gold was first discovered and extracted from this region; however, over the centuries this was forgotten and it was until 1854 that it was rediscovered again by Mr. Goodman. Mr. Goodman was the original director of the Clogau mine, which was initially a copper mine. One morning, during his regular supervision he casually picked up a stray rock and to his amazement he found a golden metal when he broke the rock into two.

It was only then that he realized that he mine that he had been using for extracting copper was in fact a mine filled with the most precious type of gold available in the world. Soon, the mine was turned to a full gold extracting mine and it continued to produce some of the best quality gold in the world. Later the mine had to be shut down due to economic reasons.

The mine was later bought by William Roberts and his family and attempts were first made to convert the mine into a tourist attraction. However, due to several reasons, including safety concerns, this never became possible. Efforts were then made to evaluate and find out if any gold was still left in the mine.
After some research, the mine was reopened and mining activities were started on a small scale. A small quantity of gold was still left in the gold mine, but only enough to provide with a small quantity of gold over 3 years. The cost of extracting gold was quite high, which made it all the more precious to the world.

The mine continued to produce gold till 1995, the precious gold that was extracted was sold in the form of expertly hand crafted rare jewelries. In 1995, after three years of re opening the mine it had to be shut down again due to the high cost of extraction as well as the scarcity of gold. The mine remains shut till date.

The Clogau mine has the history of producing the finest quality of gold since the Roman times and although it does not operate anymore, it continues to remain a vital component of the history and legacy of Wales. Welsh gold is extremely rare, unlike gold found in South Africa there aren’t any extensive gold mines remaining in the world today that produce Welsh gold and Clogau gold.
